I’m a surfer. At heart. ;o) I’ve never set foot on a surfboard, but I’m a huge sofa surfer and love to watch it on tv. That’s why art like this matters. It gives you a way to dream, escape, aspire. I can look at this and imagine crouching on that board, looking at the wave barreling down on me. Okay, that’s not really how surfing is done, but that’s okay.I like the whole story I see in this painting, of the deep blue sea and the lone surfer, and how magnificent it is to be so small out there among the vast, powerful waves. Something man can’t conquer or control, that’s so much greater than yourself. There’s a lot to feel when you look at a painting, so see what this does to you.The frame and canvas are built very well. Thick, heavy, solid. It’s an impressive look. The painting, however, leaves a lot to be desired, and takes some of the joy out of it. Of course, the same picture being created by tens or hundreds of people without their hearts and souls in it comes into play when you’re trying to escape into the imagery. You can tell there’s a process to each part, from the foam to the curl of the wave, the person on the board, etc. It’s taught so that each artist does their individual part as close to the product photo as possible, so there’s little imagination or spirit in it.Overall, it’s nice to have something handmade, even though it turns out handmade with LOVE matters. It’s still attractive, though the foam on the wave is very heavy handed and not to my liking, the colors and overall impression are good. For an original painting made by human beings and in this size, the investment of $40-$50 seems fair. If you’re looking for your first real painting that won’t break your budget, this is a good entry into the world of art. It’s going to look really nice in my mancave.
